If the battery in my Toyota Smart Key dies, is there another way to unlock the vehicle and start the engine?
There is a mechanical key within the Smart Key that will open the driver’s door. Once you enter the vehicle, hold the Smart Key next to the START button and depress. This will most likely allow the engine to start. If the engine doesn’t start and the power door locks are inoperable, the concern may be a weak engine battery and not a weak Smart Key battery.

Is there a way to change the unlocking functions of the doors with the Smart Key/Smart Entry system?
The unlocking functions can be changed. Please refer to your specific vehicle’s Owner’s Manual for instructions.

The following instructions will work for most Toyota vehicles:

  1. Turn the POWER switch off.
  2. On the Smart Key remote, simultaneously press the red alarm button and the lock button for about 5 seconds until you hear it beep.
  3. Unlock the doors using the Smart Key remote and open one of the doors.
    Repeat these steps until you get to the desired mode.

What does the Smart Key deactivation (cancel) switch do?
This switch allows the Smart Key functions to be deactivated. If the Smart Key functions have been deactivated, you will need to use the slide-out mechanical key to unlock the door. For instructions on deactivating the Smart Key, please refer to your Owner’s Manual.

What type of battery does the Smart Key use?

How do I remove the mechanical key from the Smart Key remote?
Depending on the type of Smart Key, it will have a release button or lock knob (sliding switch). Refer to your Owner’s Manual for specific instructions.

While driving, the multi-display screen displayed an error message stating “key not detected in vehicle”. Why did this occur?
This occurs when the Smart Key is not being detected in the vehicle for some reason. It is possible the key was in a purse or other location, and something was covering the key which caused the signal to be blocked.
