Important Car Maintenance That’s Often Neglected

April 14th, 2017 by

You get your oil changes done faithfully and your tire rotations done on time, every time. That means your Toyota is properly maintained, doesn’t it? Well, not quite. There’s more to car maintenance that is often neglected by car owners. In your Toyota owner’s manual, the maintenance guide indicates services that need to be performed for your Toyota to stay in peak condition.

Here are some important car maintenance services that are often neglected.

Fluid Checks

As a Toyota owner, you should be familiar with how to check your fluids. You should also make it part of your routine to check their levels and conditions. Anytime you stop at the gas station, pop the hood. Check your oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, and power steering fluid to ensure they are at the proper level. Don’t open the radiator cap! If you want to check your coolant, look in the reservoir.

Brake Fluid Change

The brake fluid in your car is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture in the system. After a while, the fluid can’t absorb any additional moisture and the water begins to corrode brake components from the inside out. You may experience brake fade or a leak that could have been avoided.

Follow the dealership’s recommendation for changing your brake fluid.

Coolant Flush

Because of its extended service interval, coolant flushes tend to be overlooked. Your engine coolant is crucial for keeping the engine at the right temperature and lubricating cooling system components. If it’s low or its pH level has changed, it can cause cooling system problems or overheating issues. Typically, your engine coolant should be flushed every 5 years or 100,000 miles.

Spare Tire

Your spare tire won’t do you any good in an emergency if it’s flat. At every oil change service, have your spare tire pressure checked. If it isn’t holding air like it should, have it resealed or repaired. It could help you avoid a major inconvenience.
